Position Description:
The Associate Production Scientist position is responsible for the running of sophisticated computer models to produce scientific wind resource reports and data for wind energy developers, wind farm operators, utilities and financial institutions. This position works closely with the company scientists, as well as providing support to the sales organization in pre- and post-sales efforts. This position reports to the Manager, Wind Operations & Systems Support.
Principal Duties / Responsibilities:
- Skilled execution of the wind regime assessment process.
- Understand customer requests, offer creative technical solutions, prepare input data, run the necessary computer models, and produce reports describing the results.
- Use sophisticated modeling, data analysis, and statistical techniques in the process of characterizing wind energy potential for various sites around the world.
- Test and implement solutions based on weather and flow modeling for use in wind characterization and predictive systems for wind energy and other applications including air quality and military uses.
- Apply expert knowledge to model design, feasibility analysis of projects / products, quantitative assessment of the benefits from each project / product, and communicate results to staff and customers.
- Design and build predictive models based on the latest technologies including support vector machines, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and statistical modeling for various applications.
- Work directly with end customers to explain model results and implications, as well as answer project specific questions.
- Prepare and manage deliverables and report generation process.
- Stay current with the latest developments in atmospheric sciences and related fields by way of scientific journals, publications, and attending scientific meetings and conferences.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience Required:
- BS in Meteorology or a closely related field; Masters degree preferred.
- Familiarity with the latest modeling techniques and tools.
- Working knowledge of UNIX, Linux, Windows and various programming languages.
- Knowledge of mesoscale and complex terrain phenomena, as well as boundary layer structure is preferred.
- Familiarity with NCEP products and mesoscale numerical modeling is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience operating effectively with customers as well as internal engineering and scientific teams.
- Experience in the wind industry would be particularly beneficial.
- Must have excellent communication skills, including strong written and oral abilities and have a pleasant disposition with good interpersonal relations.
- Working knowledge of software modeling architecture and algorithm development as well as the emerging applications within the geosciences.
- Must be independent, self-motivated, self-managed person with ability to focus on multiple projects and activities simultaneously.
